Do's and Dont's when it comes to webdesign
- Try to make a nice colourscheme and make sure that your text is readable.
- Keep each page under 50K in size, people will not wait for your web site to load. Not everyone has got an ultra speedy connection yet ;-)
- Avoid Flash, Java and JavaScript introductions. Not everyone has them installed.
- Structure the layout so the page makes sense.
- Avoid using too many effects on your pages, think minimalist - less is more. And you don't want to scare visitors away, do you?
Navigation
- Use a simple navigation system, do not risk confusing your visitors, they won't be back.
- Check your links, make sure they are all working correctly and the pages they are pointing to are still on-topic.
Web Graphics
- Images add to the file size of your page dramatically. Keep them small and use them sparingly.
Typography
- Use sans-serif fonts. like Arial, Helvetica, Verdana and Tahoma etc. It will make the text easier to read at smaller browser settings.
- Do not mix more than three fonts on a single page. Instead use colours and font-weight (Bold) and size.
- Try and avoid using Italics, they appear jagged and harder to read than their counterparts.
Backgrounds
- Avoid loading large images as backgrounds to pages. Experiment with colour to get your message across instead. You can also use small patterns!
- Avoid using graish or bright coloured backgrounds that interfere with the legibility of your text.
Finally...
- Do not forget to update your site. Regular visitors like to see a "live" web site, it may be their only way of knowing you are still in business.
- Check your web site on as many browsers and systems as possible. Do not expect it to look identical on every platform but it should "hold together" both effectively and logically.
