Nana

Last year a friend told me about a manga called Nana and how much she enjoys reading it. So far I’ve read a couple of manga’s, but didn’t really stick to a specific series. Untill now—at the moment I’m obsessing over Nana. Probably because I can relate to the story. Luckily I don’t fall in love that easily as Nana K. Wink, but I can be insecure and I used to hang around with punk people. Not that I was punk myself, but I like people with alternative/non-comformistic opinions. Also I’ve always enjoyed music and like many people secretly dreamt of becoming a singer, lol Grin. Since my singing voice isn’t really good and hobby bands I sang in didn’t last long, I just stick to listening to music or watching shows like Idols Wink.

Nana manga anime

Back to the manga. Nana is a story revolving around two girls who are both named Nana. Nana K. -a small town-girl- travels to Tokyo to start a new live together with her friends. Nana O. is a punk singer who wants to start her musical career in Tokyo, after her boyfriend Ren went there to join the band Trapnest. Both Nana’s meet on the train to Tokyo by coincidence and find out they have a few things in common, although they do look completely different. In Tokyo they lose sight of each other until both Nana’s go house hunting and arrive at the same place. They decide to live together in appartment 707 (Nana means 7 in Japanese) and the story continues from there on.

If you enjoy the manga I can also recommend the anime, it does a good job at following the storyline. You can download episode 1-43 with English subs at nana-nana.net
The manga is also available online, but personally I prefer reading the real volumes and this supports the publishers. Currently creator Ai Yazawa has put her NANA series on hold due to a sudden illness. Let’s hope she’ll be back to good health soon Yes

  1. Some time ago I’ve got a promotional booklet with the first chapter of Nana, and it looks quite good.Smile
I also prefer the actual volumes; besides supporting the author, reading on a screen computer is so tiresome too.Angry

  2. Raven

    Happy Birthday!Heart

  3. Have yet to watch Nana or read the manga, but have fallen in love with the drawing style and think it has a wonderful storyline

  4. Oh! I love NANA Smile. Ai Yazawa also wrote Paradise Kiss, it’s not quite like NANA, but the storyline is also very “relatable” and the fashion is amazing Heart

  5. Natasja

  9. Ohhhh!!! I’m glad I checked in to see your blog posts up and running.
I love reading your posts! Wink

It’s funny that you blog about this, I just finished watching the whole anime about last week. Without spoiling anything, I found the ending to be very, very bittersweet…Sad

Excuse me if this is the wrong place to ask, but….Natasja, you posted about this time last year of a fashion/clothing site for ladies. Something about a “sweet cardigan”, I think?
Do you remember the site I’m talking about? Do you happen to have the link to the site at hand, I’d like to do some shopping there! Yes

    Cheers and love! Coffee

  11. hooray for another NANA reader/fan Razz
i really love Ai Yazawa’s works! especially NANA and her previous manga: paradise kiss
i also hope she recovers soon Grin

  12. Yeah Nana is definitely awesome. I hope Ai Yazawa will get better soon and she is able to finish the Nana manga. The anime was already released back in 2006 and covers 47 episodes in total. Nowadays it’s not that hard to get your hands on the DVD box with the episodes of Nana even if you live in The Netherlands. You can buy it at the ‘wellknown’ webshops. You can buy the manga from those stores too.

It’s good you listed the Nana fansite, but instead of pointing to cheap downloads you could have also pointed to the fact Nana has been around for some years now and easily available through regular stores. As you said it’s all about supporting the publishers AND Ai Yazawa.

  13. Gotta check this out…
I’m broke, so I can’t support the publishers, sadly. Sad
I’m liking the cool glasses guy’s pose here in the picture. Cool

  14. I tried watching nana because everyone says it’s great but too bad for me I didn’t like it all.
I got turned off by the series when nana’s boyfriend cheated on her with that annoying girl(I forgot her name). and I got more turned off when I read the complete summary.
I think it’s because the series is “too much like real life” and series like this will always affect me emotionally.I guess that makes the series so great but somehow it had a very unpleasant effect on me. Frust

    Just dropping by
    xoxo

Haha, is that friend that pointed Nana out to you maybe me? Grin
I love Nana! Oh, and today I saw in a manga shop that Nana is up to #21 in Japanese. Hopefully this means that Ai Yazawa continues to draw Nana?
